Green Tips
- Cold and looking for other options of keeping warm? During the day leave your blinds open to allow sunlight in. This heats up the room and keeps it warm. At night, close your blinds to keep the warmth and to add an extra insulation layer in your room.
- If you’re cold, try to drink warm drinks like hot chocolate, hot apple cider, hot tea, or simply, hot water! It can keep you warm for a long time and plus, you get to enjoy a nice drink while you’re studying!
- Invest in sweaters, sweat pants, tights, and wool socks if you’d like to keep warm but not turn up the heat. These articles of clothing can be kept for a long time and if you’re really getting creative, buy then in bright colours to combat the winter blues!
- We often don’t think about the impacts of keeping the light on when we don’t need it or even keeping our laptop running throughout the night. Electricity is wasted so here are some simple steps that can get you started on being more energy conscious: · Turn off your laptop before you go to bed.· Open your blinds during the day to take advantage of the natural light.· Unplug any lamps, alarm clocks, or mini fridges if you’re leaving for the weekend or for an extended period of time.Little steps can go a long way! So start off small and work your way up!
- Little changes to your lifestyle can go a long way in terms of saving energy. Next time when you're doing your laundry, try to set the washing machine to the cold water option. Your clothes will still maintain the same quality and you'll be able to save a lot of energy. Did you know that over 90% of energy used by a washing machine goes into heating the water?
- Need more tips on how improving your laundry techniques can save energy? Try doing your laundry either late in the evening or on the weekend when the energy demand is the lowest. If you usually do your laundry on the weekends, try working your schedule around doing laundry during a weeknight. This will avoid a crowded laundry room and allow you to make the first step towards saving energy!

Green Tip
The Residence Green Team would like to welcome you back to residence! Now that we’re in the midst of winter, did you know that there are other alternatives that you can do instead of turning up your heat to keep warm? Try keeping the doors open between the rooms for the heat to circulate instead of relying on one heater.
